Walking Shoe Fundamentals
Based on technical analysis conducted at our own Sports Research Lab, we've identified three key elements of walking gaits that inform the designs of our walking shoes.
See how all our walking products are designed to help you feel the excellent in every step.

HITTING THE GROUND WALKING:
When purposeful design meets powerful innovation
With its sleek, fluid-looking exterior, the 1765 doesn't seem like your everyday, run-of-the-mill walking shoe. That's because it isn't. On the contrary, the 1765 looks—and feels—undeniably fast, thanks to the innovative technologies that were applied by lead designer Christine Hall.
Christine was kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the 1765's design and how she's proving that "walking shoes" and "athletic" aren't mutually exclusive ideas.
There's a deep desire here at New Balance to create products that are not just right for people and their lifestyles, but also to make products that exceed expectations.
We started the project focusing on consumer research through sessions we called "Chat 360"—low key, relaxed conversations that took place in peoples' homes. This allowed us to hear what they really loved or really disliked about fitness walkers. That information, along with other research we did on fast-paced fitness walking, were pivotal in defining what our fitness walker should look and feel like.
Through our research we discovered fitness walkers work out in a variety of ways. One thing that stuck out to us is that many walkers were once runners or participated in other athletic sports. They had a history of raising their heart rate up and continued to do so through changing up their walking workouts. For instance, many of the people we spoke to combined their fast walks with a short light jog.
I started the design process focused on the sole because so much of what I wanted to convey was wrapped up in the midsole/outsole technologies. To get a better feel, I used clay models to illustrate different functional and visual possibilities. I worked between sketches and clay to funnel the possibilities. I wanted it to be comfortable looking but not "lazy chair" looking. It needed to look energetic but comfortable.
Once I defined what the language would be in the midsole I began merging it with the functions of the upper and outsole. Form follows function. For instance, the Fantom Fit in the forefoot was originally closer to the mirrored wavy pattern on the midsole. But we found that it was too much material in the met head area, so we changed the pattern so it would function seamlessly with the movement of the foot.
The 1765 is a hybrid in terms of product function, and its main differences reside in the technology. The 1765 has N2 cushioning, a REVlite® midsole, an extended medial post and a FantomFit upper. None of our previous models of fitness walkers have ever had this mix of performance technologies all together in the same shoe.
We wanted to make the most comfortable experience possible. We considered several combinations of technologies and found the following to be right for the fitness walkers and their lifestyles:
- In the upper, the no-sew FantomFit is the main advantage.
- The specific geometry created for the forefoot was designed for maximum flexibility and control.
- We used a lightweight REVlite compound throughout the midsole for added responsiveness.
- The N2 technology in the heel is a unique compound that has a very low compression set. This was ideal to use because it maintains shape long after other compounds do.
Along with these technologies we included a nylon shank, extended the medial post for pronation control, and as with most of our shoes, we incorporated the Ndurance rubber compound in the heel for durability.
You'll start to see distinctive looks from us that fit a variety of needs. I think our advantage, besides having great technologies, is that we value the voice of the person wearing our shoes.
Currently we're working on the 1765V2. Stay Tuned!
