New Balance Adds Two New Styles to Walking Line

December 29, 1999

BOSTON, MA, December 29, 1999 - New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. has established a reputation for providing walkers with good technical shoes that meet the various athletic needs of walkers, while providing them with plenty of options.

"We attract walkers to our brand by giving them the whole range of technical benefits we offer to other athletes," said Walking Product Manager Deirdre McDonnell.  "At the same time we recognize that each walker has an individualized regimen requiring a wide range of shoes in different styles."

In keeping with the direction of offering high-tech shoes with various options, New Balance introduces two new shoes to the Walking line for Fall 1999.  The MW/WW753 is the successor to the highly popular MW/WW752, which was rated as a "Best Buy" by Prevention magazine in the summer of 1998.

The technical presentation of the MW/WW753 is similar to its predecessor, with a Stability Web®, Walking Strike Path® outsole and Medial EVA Post for mild pronation control.  However, the new shoe has added Abzorb® in the forefoot, previously only in the rearfoot, and is reflective on all sides.  Increased mesh on the combination leather/mesh upper provides more breathability and a lighter weight.  Targeted for the serious fitness walker, the MW/WW753 also features the synthetic material Hypalon along the outside of the Walking Strike Path® for maximum cushioning.  The MW/WW753 is offered in four widths.

The second new shoe in the Walking line for Fall 1999, is also the fourth shoe in the Country Walking series.  Strongly influenced by the athletic lines, the MW/WW721 features Abzorb® in the rearfoot, the Walking Strike Path ® outsole and a stability bridge for torsional control.  The combination suede/mesh upper is more rugged looking than the traditional white walking shoe and offers an alternative for walkers who want an all-weather walking shoe.

With a shift from high-impact to low-impact fitness activity, as well as an increased interest in adventure travel, New Balance expects its walking sales to experience continued growth in 1999.
