BOSTON, February 7, 2000 - A unique Boston shelter will get a boost this week from The New Balance Foundation as the athletic footwear maker donates twenty-five hundred dollars to the shelter for battered women during its upcoming Carnaval 2000.
Casa Myrna Vazquez, Inc. will hold its seventh annual Carnaval on Friday, February 11, 2000 at the New England Aquarium from 7:30-11 p.m. New Balance's donation to Casa Myrna Vazquez, Inc. will help mark the opening of the agency's Moms and Sons Program, the only shelter in Massachusetts to house battered women and their adolescent sons together. Casa Myrna Vazquez is New England's largest community-based, multicultural organization working to eradicate domestic violence. It will celebrate the opening of the new shelter during the event this week.
Since 1977, Casa Myrna Vazquez has assisted more than 11,000 women and children in its residential programs and answered more than 80,000 hotline calls. Casa Myrna Vazquez offers battered women and their children opportunities for safety and support by providing a wide range of resources. This includes two emergency shelters and three longer-term transitional living programs serving women, teen mothers and families with adolescent sons. Casa Myrna Vazquez also provides a unique array of supportive services including mental health care, legal advocacy, economic literacy, post-shelter case management and children's programs. Diverse community education and violence prevention resources are also offered as part of Casa Myrna Vazquez' efforts to build a "community of conscience" about domestic violence.
