Laura's Story:
Almost 10 years ago, I became involved with Race for the Cure® after being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 24. I contacted the local office and asked how I could help and spread the word about young women's risk for getting breast cancer. I was sure that within a few short months, the cancer would be behind me and I'd simply be a volunteer who had a personal experience with chemo and radiation. Ten years later, I am still actively fighting breast cancer. Over the last several years, I have had a double mastectomy, more chemo cocktails than I can keep track of, shots, injections, x-rays, CT and pet scans, and more. I have had three reoccurrences since my original diagnosis in 1998. Luckily, I am still fighting, living and celebrating being a survivor. I know that advances in research have extended my life. Hopefully, there will be a cure - I need one more than ever, as the cancer has now progressed to my bones. I need to raise a beautiful 2 1/2 year old little girl with my wonderful husband Josh.
