Introducing Fresh Foam
Can a running shoe be both plush and high-performance? The Fresh Foam 980 is a neutral cushioning shoe, unlike anything you've ever stepped into before. It's a new technology that combines a more natural drop with a plush ride. Intelligent design just got smarter.
Explore the science of soft
Training is hard, but Fresh Foam is soft—unabashedly so. Watch ESPN’s Kenny Mayne get together with Team NB’s Jenny Simpson and Dustin Pedroia for a day of off-season training. Hilarity ensues when they switch sports and step into new shoes.
We surprised runners across the country and collected feedback. Their responses were equally as surprising.

"I have had three pairs of the 980s and love everything about them from the colors to the comfort. Nothing better than going for a long run in them! They're quite stylish and I've gotten quite a few comments at the gym about how great they look!"

"I've been a NB 880 wearer for years. Decided to try the Fresh Foam for a change. Did not like this shoe! The toe box is too flat, and is especially uncomfortable on my big toe where it mashed down on my toenail. Not a good feel on a run. Had to give them away since NB won't take shoes back any longer."

"I've been running in 1080s for a few years and New Balance for 10+ years. I love New Balance, and have been very happy with all of their running shoes up until now. I decided to give these shoes a shot, new technology, cool! When I run in these shoes the toe box slaps the ground in a funny and very loud manner. The shoes are fairly stiff and the cushioning does not reflect the name of the shoe, "Fresh Foam". My knees and ankles hurt after only a few weeks of use. Sorry to have spent so much money on a shoe that I am only willing to put 100 miles on. Can't wait to get my next pair of 1080s."

"On my second pair of Fresh Foam and both have frayed after 45 days. This happens on the outside of the shoe at the forefoot flex point at the welds. The welds rub the fabric to the point they begin to fray and it progresses to the point the fabric will rip. Like the comfort and the 4 mm drop. They help my knees from hurting. I use these for light walking and around town. I am not a heavy runner at all."

"I bought the Fresh Foam 980 a couple of months ago when my former running shoes wore out. These are definitely the most comfortable running shoes I've owned. Have run 2 half marathons in these shoes. Just bought a second pair so that I can alternate pairs each day. My only complaint with this shoe is with the shoe laces. They have a tendency to come untied...even when I double knot them. The laces seem to be slick and don't stay tied. I had to stop during my last half marathon when the left shoe came untied."
