    So frustrated with these

"I've worn minimus shoes for years... Currently wearing v4s with holes in the soles because I have tried -- twice now, both times unsuccessfully -- to replace them with v5. For my first order, in spite of the websites warning about the shoes running large, I ordered my true size and found my heels coming out of the shoe with each step. The rest of the shoe seemed ok - but overall felt much stiffer than previous versions. The second pair -- half size down as per the website -- amazingly my heels still came out, but the rest of the shoe was extremely uncomfortable -- tight and stiff and I'll fitting. The burrito tongue is very irritating and causes asymmetry with regards to the side fit. I tried to wear them out and needed up putting on my old pair after 15 minutes. This is particularly disappointing because all my previous minimus shoes fit like gloves out of the box - never a problem. Gave 2 stars instead of 1 only because the customer service is always great."

    Downgrade from Previous Model

"Huge fan of New Balance and their products, but was not satisfied with their new model of the Minimus. Own a pair of 20v4s I still primarily work out in due to the 20v5 not meeting my needs for working out; for example, my heel slips and is not supported what so ever, the burrito tongue is awkward, and my foot lays awkwardly in the shoe. Definitely recommend buying the previous model if possible, one of the best pair of workout shoes I've ever owned...this new model not so much."

    Strange Fitment

"I'm a huge fan of the minimus v2 and v3 (I still wear these to the gym daily) and really want to embrace v5 but I can't. The tongue and how you lace the shoes is not the best design to say the least. For some reason, I feel as though my knees buckle in when I'm walking in these shoes. And to be frank, they aren't as stylish as previous generations. I can't break the awkwardness when moving around in these shoes. They simply feel weird - not neutral at all. Unfortunately I had to return these shoes - i'll be holding on to v3 until I see an awesome revival when v6 comes out. Minimus version 2 had the best colors and v3 had amazing comfort while staying true to the minimalism feel. Hopefully the design team takes into account all of the feedback from us diehard New Balance consumers when the next one comes out."

"Perfect for their purpose. They are feather light and as comfortable as house slippers. First shoes I've owned with a burrito tongue. Stays in place wonderfully. Many people have found them to be quite stylish"

They ruined the sole with hard plastic

"The goal for a minimal shoe is to have the feel of the ground, which is what I enjoyed about earlier Minkmis models. NB has ruined it with the harder sole they've added which amounts to a reinforced arch feeling, and undercuts the benefits of close-to-barefoot running."

Please go back to lace based design; burrito is terribl

"I still wear my V3 or V4 (not sure) even though they have holes. These burrito tongue monstrosities sit in the closet unworn. Unfortunately, my cut off to return during the summer happened during a trip. I should have gone with my instinct and returned soon after receiving. But I thought maybe it was a "break in" issue. No, it's a poor design issue. Why on earth would you restrict how the tongue is positioned? Laces gave many options, particularly on width, tightness, etc. Please, please, please New Balance. Go back to the old design."

Stiff burrito tongue caused severe lacerations

"Unlike previous Minimus versions, the top of burrito tongue of this shoe is made from a very stiff material. So if you like running without socks, be forewarned. After just two miles I had severe lacerations at the front of both ankles. I currently rotate through six pairs of earlier Minimus trainers sockless with no problem. I can't imagine why NB suddenly made the top of the tongue so stiff."

"I really like this shoe for gym workouts and treadmill. I like the collar around the ankle. It fits snug, and it adds a little extra support to the ankle. The toe box is wide. It allows for a great base will lifting. I would order a half size smaller like the description says. I normally wear an 11.5, and the 11.0 fits perfect."

    Tongue digs into ankle.

"Unfortunately the tongue on this shoe is just too stiff and digs into my ankle. The rest of the shoes is just like the MX20V4, which I loved. I ordered these hoping it would be the same asize I love the previous version, unfortunately nobody has them in my size. Hopefully New Balance will adjust the tongue design and make it less rigid for the next model because I love the shoe itself and it's perfect for crossfit. I'm hoping the tongue will break down a bit with some wear but for now I won't be using them for working out, the just dig too much."

"I was looking for a wide, very lightweight, no rise shoe, and I got it with this purchase; however, the rubber tongue is very uncomfortable. If it was fabric, it might be one of the most confortable shoes I have ever worn."

Poor update of what was once a good shoe.

"I've used Minimus' for several years and have never been disappointed, until now. When updating the shoes, you expect a lot of the things to be pretty standard, like size, width, etc. I got these in a size smaller than usual. They felt better than my normal size, but still not quite right. I reluctantly purchased them anyway to appease the pushover NB salesperson. Never have I regretted a shoe purchase more in my life. I thought this would go away with time after they were broken in, but the toe box is insanely huge.... Like, Ronald McDonald huge. They are so big they gave me blisters under calluses after the first couple of runs. I have ran marathons, and while in the army, walked hundreds of miles in boots and I can count how many blisters I have had on one hand. These are so bad that I will have to sit out of the Army 10 miler (which I have already paid for). Also, if you have even slightly narrow feet, forget about these. I keep them tied as tight as they will go, and they're still not tight enough. I really liked New Balance and I was an unofficial unpaid spokesperson. They were my brand and I would not let anyone bad mouth them. But these left a bad taste in my mouth, it's doubtful that I will purchase another pair of NB minimus."

    Poor Fit

    - Stovall, NC

"These shoes don't live up to the New Balance reputation at all. Most New Balance shoes are extremely comfortable and fit very well. These shoes, however, are a very odd cut, and they run much too wide and too loose. The fit is extremely uncomfortable, to the point that your feet slide all over inside the shoes when you attempt to walk."

Tongue digs into the top of my foot

    - Redwood City, CA

"I have had two prior models of Minimus shoes and they were very comfortable. This latest iteration is not. The "burrito" tongue produces a ridge across the top of the foot that is quite uncomfortable. I gave it a few weeks wear before reviewing to see if that got better, but unfortunately it has not. In addition there is less mesh on this version so it runs a bit hotter than earlier versions. I do wish NB wouldn't keep messing with designs that are perfectly functional."

Surprized given some of the negative reviews

    - Livonia

"Did not want to risk on line purchase given comments on site regarding fit. Had an earlier version years ago so persisted and went to NB store . Glad I did . Use at gym - excellent feel to the floor / elliptical etc. and good fit for me"

It did not meet my expectations

    - Easton, MA, USA

"I don't like that the tongue is attached to the side of the shoe. The shoe is not the easiest to put on. It gets wet inside very easily. The arch support is weak. I purchased it because of a arch problem and I had to purchase schools arch supports in order to wear the shoes."

    Poor sizing

    - Adirondacks

"I wear a size ten in all shoes. This shoe runs 1/2 a size big.need a 9.5. I ordered them online so my mistake."

Sometimes upgrades are worse than previous versions

    - Canton, OH, USA

"I have been a big fan of the Minimus 20v4 training shoe as I have already purchased 2 pairs. I originally purchased them as a travel shoe due to their light weight but have ended up using them as my every day training shoes. Once I had a couple of months of wear on the last pair of the 20v4's I decided to purchase another pair to have on hand as a spare. I noticed that the v4 type was no longer available but figured the fit of the 20v5 would be similar so I purchased a pair. I was really disappointed with the shoes once they arrived. The fit had totally changed as I felt that my foot was not properly supported as in the 20v4 types. After wearing them a few minutes, it was apparent that these would not going to be confortable so I returned them. I am not sure what I am going to do once my last pair of the 20v4's wear out as the 20v5's don't fit my feet. I am not sure who pushed for the upgrade to this style but they need to realize that they just tinkered with the design long enough to make it bad (my opinion). On the plus side, the return process is super easy and I received prompt credit for my return."

Can say enough about its comfort and durablity!

Minimus line is a back saver.

    - Austin, TX, USA

"I have had back problems for almost 20 years (herniated disks, etc.). After using the Minimus product line my back pain has been eliminated. I LOVE the Minimus shoes and pray New Balance never stop making the product. It may not be the same for everybody but it has been wonderful for me!"

    - Kansas

"I have owned four pairs of New Balance Minimus. I wore them for at least three years. With this model I found myself sorry disappointed. There is no reason for their decision to slowly increase to a less and less minimal shoe. At one point the shoe was almost entirely cloth with rubber pods on the bottom which faired great in runs although it did cause slight issues if you ran on rougher surfaces where things might poke up between the pods. What we find here is easily their best looking shoe but also the most restrictive and unnatural. An arch that digs into the side of my foot on a shoe that should have none, a lace system that I cannot lace up tight without having extreme cramping and a sole that is needlessly thick. Here it is April and I have yet to see any additions to the line while they continue to pump out more and more foamed up giant soled shoes. I sure hope this is not the end of the Minimus and NB returns to what made this a great product for years"

    I miss the old design!

    - Austin, TX

"I've been buying New Balance Minimus-style shoes for years and was disappointed to see a lot of the Minimus products get discontinued. I was very pleased the with 20v3 and 20v4 versions of this shoe, but they made drastic design changes to the newest version. The burrito tongue fits snug around the middle part of my foot, but the toe-box is super roomy and heel tends to slip slightly (even after trying a half-size down). I usually use a lace-lock lacing pattern for a more snug heel fit, but there isn't an additional lace hole on the outer parts of the shoe due to the new burrito tongue design. As a Minimus loyalist for years, I was disappointed that the new design causes me outer arch pain and poor fit in general."

    a horrible fit and design

    - St. Louis, MO, USA

"The offset lacing gave no support to the mid foot, the toe box was too narrow and the heel was so wide that my foot slipped out when walking."

    Awesome customer service !

    Decent shoe, if it fits

    - Oregon, USA

"This shoe is not for even mildly narrow-footed people. I had about an inch of space between my outer toe and the inside of the shoe, but my big toe was near the end, so I couldn't have gone any smaller. I liked being able to feel the floor, and they were super flexible with good support, but yeah. The medium width is waaaaay too wide. I might purchase if a narrow version is available in the future. The link I went through did not specify whether this review is for the men's or women's Minimus 20v5 trainer, but this review applies to both as I tried on both shoes."

Shoes are awkwardly shaped when wearing them. They angle inward as if you had defective feet.

    - Elk Grove, CA, USA

"I was excited when I got my shoes, since I own the prior model and like them a lot. When I did receive them, I was let down because when I put them on, the shoes looked like there was something wrong with my feet. They angle inward on both sides, almost as I'm stepping with the inner part of my sole. I thought maybe I got a bad pair, so I sent them back for an exchange. When I got my 2nd pair, they were the exact same thing. I sent those back as well, so I'm pretty disappointed, since I really wanted to get a new minimal type shoe to use with my workouts. I would not recommend them."

    Feb 3, 2016

    Good design, okay quality

    - Utah, USA

"I've had Minimus trainers for years and have loved them. I've used them for everything. The thing that normally goes out first is that the harder outsole starts separating from the softer midsole, and then starts to tear apart. Unfortunately, that happened with these 20v5s in less than a week. I train aggressively, but I hoped that they would last longer given that I used them exclusively at the gym. I super-glued the piece that flapped (then tore) off back on, so hopefully I'll still get some more life out of them."

    Jan 30, 2016

    Cuts into my feet

    - Sunnyvale, CA

"Not a fan of the burrito tongue. The stiff edge lining at the top of the tongue and around the sides and back heel cut into my feet. I had the same problem with the v3 version of the trainer. v4 is a better shoe for me. Wish they still had the v4 in my size still in stock."
