"Nice shoe and very comfortable. Being waterproof is good and the thinsilate is not over the top hot. Pretty nice shoe/boot. I would recommend this product."

    Substitute for MW978s?

    - Redwood City, CA

"Both the representative on the phone and a salesperson at the shoestore said that this boot is a replacement for the MW978s that I loved. After several hikes, I am not convinced. The higher ankle rubs and is irritating when I walk. I can't wait to get them off! This one is just not up to the 978 standard. Please bring it back!"

    Nice Comfortable Hiking/Walking boot

    - Oakland, CA, USA

"I'm always happy when I can find a boot that is comfortable and accommodates my AFO's, and these boots fits that bill. I use them as a motorcycle boot and walking so fare no complaints in fact I'm going to order another pair in a different color."

The shoes do not meet expectations.

    - Prescott, AZ, USA

"I ordered a 4X wide because I have a high instep. The sides of the shoes do not extend enough to cover the tongue."

    Not Impressed..

    - Texas

"Not very comfortable . Bring back my good old 1569's. Fit not as in other NB's, waterproofing deteriorates after use. Just not impressed with this boot."

    Good Looking,Comfortable & Waterproof

    - Delaware, USA

"I purchased the gray color, size 14 4E. The boot looks good and fits. My biggest question was the boot waterproof and it is. The last NB model I purchased failed in this regard. I have worn them in the snow, mud, and stood in streams with no problems."

    First Impression: Not Good!

    - Bronx, NY

"I just received my MW1401 in black. I am VERY disappointed in the fit. I ALWAYS wear a 10.5 4E for every New Balance I've purchased and they always fit perfect. These shoes run so narrow, I would have been better off buying either an 11/4E, or 10.5/6E. Also, the laces are way too short for this type of shoe. I get the impression New Balance is trying to save money on materials. I will wear them for a few days to see if they stretch a bit in the break-in period. If they do, I'd add a 1/2 a star to the review. If not, I can no longer buy New Balance online since I can't trust their sizing. On a positive note, the sole cushioning is quite comfortable. But I'll have to see if they stay that way. Not sure if these are a daily wearer."

Finally a shoe as good as the NB1201

    - Denver, CO

"I have hammer toes, high arches and a nueropathy and these shoes have made my feet comfortable while providing good support. I enjoy walking in these shoes. The exterior material sheds water, stays clean and looks good. They keep my feet warm and dry."

    still early

    - Texas

"Have not given the shoes a good workout in the field. However on the several long walks I've taken they feel great. Ask me again in August after I've spent three months in Yellowstone."

Would have been 5 Stars with better laces...

    - Estes Park, Co.

"I have two pair, and live in the mountains of Colorado. The Black and the Grey models in a 13 B... They are both extremely comfortable, and fit the same. I have neuropathy in both feet, and have not found more comfortable and practical footwear than these. They are my daily wear 90% of the time, and have been good on all terrain except ice, where they are average at best for traction. A better sole material for ice might be an idea for New Balance in the future for people who live with ice and snow for 4-5 months every year. No matter that slight issue, I really do like these boots. They would be 5 Stars, but the laces are terrible. They are too short, and are loathe to stay tied. The lace sheathing is too slick, which means in a full day, the laces come loose several times. I do not have the same issue with my other boots and shoes."

    1400V1 Questionable sizing

    - Park City, UT, USA

"I ordered 1400V1 size 7 4E based on the training shoes I have ordered in the past in that size. They were extremely small in both length and width and I had a hard time getting my feet into them. I kept them on for five minutes then boxed them up and returned them. There was such a size difference that it makes me wonder if they were mis-sized. I have worn nothing but NB training and walking shoes for many years and am mystified that there could be that much difference in footwear size between products made by NB."

    Great Lightweight Boot

    - Bloomington, MN

"Hard to find boots in narrow widths. Great fit, lightweight and comfortable. Too early to tell durability, but seem to be well made."

    Only One Flaw

    - Ohio

"I work as a mail carrier and this boot took an eleven mile walking route for about 3-3.5 months and still has tread remaining. Its tough its comfy and the lightest shoe i have ever had in my adult life, The water proofing has now worn out and the insole could use replacing. For me it did excellent, gripping on almost everything but the one flaw this has is the tread isn't deep enough if your on mud or anything like that and because it is a tougher tread material even wet wood can be a bit slick at times. That being said i'm likely to buy them again they are still comfy to walk in and i have recommended them to my friends."

    The Product Needs Longer Laces

    - Draper, UT

"I would have given the product a 5 star rating except that the shoe laces are not long enough. The laces could use an extra inch or two to make tying them easier and not at the very end,"

    New Balance walkers/hikers

    - Athens, Ohio

"I am a senior with ankle issues. I have used this style of New Balance shoes for over the last 10 years. They give me great support in the outdoors or stylish when I wear them to Church. Thank you for a great product!"

    New Balance 1400v1

    - Montana, USA

"The 4E width is not as the 4E width of your other products. The laces are too short and skinny. The label on the top of the tongue crumples when tying the shoe."

Super comfort in a hiking boot.

    - Colorado

"I came to NewBalance because they are one of the very few hiking boot makers that respects their users enough to make boots that fit. I wear 11-EEEE, but most makers don't make anything wider than a medium. How they can make boots that aren't wide enough for a major portion of the population is beyond belief. Anyway, I bought these last Friday, along with the model 1200 insoles. I've got 20-miles on them so far, mostly on flat ground, through thick grasses. Saturday I was out in 17-degrees F with frost on the grass, walking around 4-miles. My feet stayed totally dry and comfortable. These boots are the most comfortable that I've ever owned. The toe box is roomier that most boots and the heel and mid-foot support is excellent, without being tight. Incredibly, these boots are as comfortable as the boat shoes that I also bought at NB. I'd previously owned some Gore-Tex boots by NB and was actually looking to buy those again, but they've been discontinued. Lucky for me, because these are more comfortable by a couple of orders of excellence. The tongue is nicely padded so that I can tie the laces tighter than I can with other boots, without putting pressure on the top of my foot. Great boot."

    Great Walking Shoe

    - Cocoa, FL, USA

"Great product! As a recent amputee, Losing half of my right foot, could not find a comfortable shoe that would stay on, but this shoe is perfect. Thanks New Balance"

    Product needs work!

    - Black Mountain, NC, USA

"What is the purpose of the loose piece of fabric on the shoe tongue where the laces are to be tied?? They get in the way of tying the laces... which are really too short to give a double tie. Whose idea was it to have a red interior ... I want a serious walking shoe not a "fashion statement.""

    waterproof but uncomfortable

    - Marylnd

"I bought these to replace a pair of 910 goretex low cuts that had served me well. they are not offered in gore tex anymore. these shoes if laced fully restrict ankle movement. They don't appear to have much custioning. Maybe in time they will become more comfortable. Woud like to see a lighter weight, low cut pair of shoes much like my old 910's."
