"I have happily owned several pair of NB990's. However, the latest pair has a tongue which is too short and which slides over to the side. It is too short to even use the upper portion of the lace system! I hope this is a defect and not a design change."

"I have been wearing these shoes for almost 30 years and have always enjoyed the comfort, style, and performance. Always held up for many years. Unfortunately New Balance must have made a change in the past few years, as now the shoe sole separates from the shoe, tears, the glue comes undone and they disintegrate quickly. Not the same quality any longer. Never had this happen before, but it also happened to the New Balance cross-trainers I bought. Regrettably, I will have to transition to another brand. Thought I would be a lifer."

"I have to echo the complaints I have read from others about the poor re-design of this shoe. The tongue has been substantially shortened, and it now slides down and around inside the shoe, rendering the shoes exceptionally uncomfortable and almost unwearable. I cannot express how unfortunate this re-design is. I cannot recommend this shoe at all anymore. The tongue slides so far down, I lose most of the padding against the top of my foot, and it rubs creating a hot spot that should not be there. I have to ask this question: Did no one bother to wear these shoes before they were put into production?"

Yes, I recommend this product.
"I have worn this shoe since 1983 with many miles and races run in them. I have never had a pair break down or fall apart, in fact I have a pair that I ran 600 miles in and now use for mowing and yard work. Other than the grass stains these shoes are still in good shape. As far as a bad odor, I guess I don't go around sniffing my running shoes, because I except them to stink."

"I am a huge New Balance fan and have worn this style shoe for at least 20 year and always pay the over $100 price per pair that has now gotten up to the $140 range. New Balance changed the design of this shoe about two years ago and has TOTALLY RUINED a classic product. The tongue is way too short and I have found no way to keep it from sliding down into the shoes. Also, the quality of the shoe has deteriorated and parts of the shoe start coming off from cheap sewing and adhesive. I am looking for another brand and style shoe as I refuse to pay this premium price for what has become a horrible product."
