New Collection. New Performance. New Balance.

Meghan Caffrey and Tera Linafelter, apparel product managers, were driving from the Lawrence, MA New Balance factory to our Boston headquarters one day and noticed a trend with runners along the Charles River. “Many of the women were wearing shorts that didn’t necessarily flatter their figures, with cheap, white cotton tank-tops,” Linafelter said. “We realized that these fitness runners want something comfortable, fashionable and affordable while running.” The duo began brainstorming how they could bring these three qualities into an NB performance apparel line, and thus, the New Performance, or NP collection, was born. The apparel team began developing women’s shorts for a low price-point market with an array of colors and created tops and sports bras to match. The men’s line followed with the same concept.

Villanova, Texas A & M Shine in 2010 New Balance Collegiate Invitational

The New Balance Collegiate Invitational is one of the premier indoor meets leading up to the NCAA championships. For many college athletes it represents their first experience in a championship-like atmosphere, with large crowds, tight quarters, and a two day, two stage trials and finals structure. LSU coach Dennis Shaver described that atmosphere in LSU’s Daily Reveille: “It’s a production,” Shaver said. “There will be a lot of noise. It’ll be jam packed with people. It’ll be an exciting meet for the athletes.”

Naked Feet - A Look At The Barefoot Running Movement

After hundreds of years of walking with shoes on, is it time we relearn? There’s a movement going on that challenges the very foundation of sneaker wearers (not to mention sneaker companies) everywhere called barefooting. At its core, this running movement is all about getting back to basics. It’s based on the notion that feet perform best when they’re free to flex as the human form intended, without man-made cushioning and without inhibition. Most recently, runner and Harvard researcher Daniel Lieberman released a study in the journal Nature (subscription required) that supported the notion of barefoot running as a benefit to feet.

2010 New Balance Games Recap

Team New Balance and members of the New Balance family joined elite high school and professional athletes from all over the world for the 2010 New Balance Games at the Armory Track in Washington Heights, NY this past weekend. The event brought high school and elite personal and national bests, memorable welcomes, helping hands, smiles, grunts, sweat, and tears.
