NB Fitness Ambassador Holly Perkins gives us a look at rock&tone

We caught up with Holly before her appearance on Oprah tomorrow to get her thoughts on our new rock&tones, and did we get them soup to nuts. Being a fitness expert, Holly is obviously interested in how, why and what the rock&tones work. Everything from the technicals to where she wears them, our question and answer session generated enough information to make anyone a toning shoe expert.

Q: What is “rock&tone”?
A: rock&tone is New Balance’s first entry into toning footwear. At its simplest; it is a rounded bottom shoe that allows your feet to move in a more natural way that optimizes muscular involvement and caloric expenditure. At its most exciting and interesting, it is a concept in footwear that will show you a whole new way to use your body. The New Balance rock&tone shoe features a rounded sole unit made of a soft, lightweight cushioning material (Acteva Ultra LITE) that is incredibly comfortable and shockingly effective.

Q: How does rock&tone work?
A: New Balance rock&tone causes your feet to move differently in the ideal movement (i.e. heel-to-toe) pattern to create a stronger, more functional body. With every step you take in New Balance rock&tone shoes, the heel to toe rocking motion demands a greater range of front to back motion and can increase muscle use up to 27%. Also, the soft material in the sole unit simulates walking on sand, making your muscles work harder which can lead to up to an 8% increase in calorie burning over traditional walking shoes.

Q: What are the benefits of wearing rock&tone shoes?
A: When you walk in New Balance rock&tone shoes, you can tone muscles from your legs (calves, quadriceps, hamstrings) to your core (glutes, hips, abs) and can inspire increased calorie burning. It’s a workout in a shoe — simply by walking as you normally do throughout your day in rock&tone, you can give your entire lower body a strength-training workout. This can cause up to an 8% increase in total calorie expenditure! Even more important is that rock&tone can help your body help itself. rock&tone can inspire your body to activate the muscles that it’s designed to use. In addition to the strength-training you can receive, you can also teach your body to be more functional. You can move better AND burn more calories.

Q: How do you know rock&tone shoes work and what is the history of rocker shoes?
A: Rocker bottom shoes have been used extensively in the pedorthic and rehabilitation communities for years. They change the way you strike the ground causing an improved plantarflexion (toe-pointing) and dorsiflexion (foot-flexion/toes up). New Balance has tested rock&tone in their Sports performance lab and discovered that there can be an increase in muscle activation up to in 27% and an increase in calorie burn up to 8%. But the proof is in your own experience. A 30 minute brisk walk can demonstrate the degree of stimulus from the shoes. You likely will feel an undeniable activation in your high hamstrings where they meet the glutes. These shoes were intentionally built with a soft and thick midsole. While results may vary, this has been proven to make your muscles work harder during activity thereby increasing your total calorie burn.

Q: How is your product different from those others currently on the market?
A: While rock&tone provides similar benefits to other shoes on the market, they have two key benefits over other brands: 1) they look amazing—even a little hip and 2) they are incredibly comfortable. rock&tone don’t look like an orthopedic or traditional “toning” shoe— they look more like normal shoes. Beyond the mechanical benefit of these shoes, there is a comfort level that is hard to match, plus they are so lightweight!

Q: Is there something that these shoes offer that consumers can find elsewhere?
A: In my experience I have found rock&tone to be the most comfortable rocker bottom on the market. In fact, this might be hands down, the most comfortable shoe of any kind that I’ve ever worn. I also feel they are the most visually appealing since they offer a subtle aesthetic that doesn’t scream “toning shoe”. No one knows that I am getting a workout when I wear these shoes. I won’t sacrifice comfort and ease-of-wear just to get a toning benefit from a shoe. Other brands are hard to wear and not as comfortable or as lightweight as rock&tone.

Q: How long did it take for you to see a difference in toning, tightening, etc?
A: As soon as I received my New Balance rock&tone shoes, I wore them while cleaning and hanging around the house, running errands and grocery shopping, and taking the dog for a walk. The more exposure your body has to the shoes, the more quickly you can start to feel the effects. Personally, I noticed an immediate response; I could feel definite action in my hamstrings and glutes—exactly where I like to feel a workout. I knew right away that the rock&tones were working—and working really well.

I am a nurse and work 12 hour shifts. I have been wearing New Balance shoes for over 10 years, and LOVE the new Rock and Tone Shoes. I bought a pair 2 days ago. I can feel the difference every time I walk down the hall. When I first tried them on in the store, I told my son, "I found my shoe, it's like walking on a cloud." I wouldn't even try any other shoes on.
Thanks for the great shoes!

I NEED these shoes. I beat plantar fascitis but DO NOT want it to come back. I need shoes that make it so walking on concrete feels like I'm walking on sand or walking on a nicely mown golf course. I will be starting a job where I'm on my feet all day and want to get healthy and in shape, not debilitated and crippled.

Please make a guy version!!!!

thanks!

I love these shoes. The toe room is great and they don't slip on my heel. I ordered the size I normally wear in a tennis shoe and they fit perfect. I bought the gray but will buy white also. My only shoe from now on. Extremely comfortable.

I was thrilled to see NB's new line of rock & tone shoes but I was very disappointed to see that narrow widths are not available at this time.

No other manufacturer makes a narrow width rock & tone style shoe (at any price). I was so sure that NB would be the first & I am very disappointed to see that you did not include your narrow width customers in your newest product launch.

I have worn NB running & athletic shoes in a 9.5AA for more than 25 years & I wouldn't consider wearing any other athletic footwear. Please please please consider making narrow widths available in your new rock & tone line. I would purchase multiple pairs immediately.....

Thank you all for your comments!

Cameron and Gothrond: Good news on that front - keep an eye out for truebalance and rock&tone for men coming this Fall.

Would these shoes be good for over-pronaters who are told to wear motion controlled shoes? I would love to buy a pair. I over-pronate and I suffer from plantar fasciitis.

When are they going to come out in NARROW..black and taupe please!

New Balance is my only walking/jogging/working shoe, but only because it is the only one that carries NARROW ( AA) 9.5 sizes.

But, I am so sad, not on Rock and Tone yet.

Please make them!

Oh my gosh..just read the comment by Joyeuse..I promise, I am not the same person! Could have been me writing though..I, too, have worn NB narrow for as long as I can remember ( I am 53) because of the sizing problem.

I have worn New Balance shoes for over 20 years because I wear an AA (narrow) width. My ortho doctor recommended that I purchase a rocker type athletic shoe. I cannot find the rocker shoe anywhere in my width. I, too, am very disappointed that New Balance chose to ignore its customers who wear a narrow width.

I too am very disappointed that none of the new rocker-type shoes come in narrow widths. There are more of us out there than you think

Hello everyone, this is in response to the comments regarding narrow width sizing in rock&tone. Width's is a feature New Balance prides its self on offering its valued customers, but a variety of widths are not always offered in every style. This has a lot to do with the type of "last" a shoe is built on. New Balance has a number of "lasts", essentially a foot model a shoe is build around, some offer a wider fit (ie: SL-2) other's a more narrow fit (ie: PL-1). More information on Lasts and fit can be found here on our site: http://www.newbalance.com/performance/running/total-fit/#/creating-your-fit

As it relates to rock&tone, this particular style was built on the P-505. This last naturally offers a much narrower fit than many of our other lasts, which aided in the decision to not produce a 2A width.

However, we greatly appreciate all of the feedback! It's great suggestions from customers, such as yourselves, that we're able to give back to our product development teams and they take into great consideration for future products.

Those of you looking for an all black option, check out shopnewbalance.com an all over black leather option is available!!

I have been wearing New Balance shoes for many yrs, in fact alternated between 2 pair when I did the breast cancer 60 mi walk last year...I love the shoes!!! I'm very happy to see that they have come out with this new Rock & Tone & I'm planning to purchase a pair...currently I'm suffering from plantar fascitis, & wonder if this is a good shoe for me at this time. If anyone can give me their input I'd love to hear it. Thanks!!!

I too am awaiting an all black men's rock and tone that I can wear to work. Been wearing NewBalance since high school. All other brands lack sufficient arch support. Please make the arch on the men's model MASSIVE!

After reading several reviews I think these are the walking shoes I'm going to get. Can someone please give me a rough estimate of cost in AUD dollars. Thanks!

Another question for NB staff: since the rock&tone shoe is built on a narrower last, how would that affect someone with a wider foot? I wear a 8 D in NB 993. Should I order 1/2 size up?

March 8th 2011 at 5:40 PM EST

I have worn NB shoes for years because they are true to size and come in narrow. Now I need a "rocker bottom" walking shoe and NB doesn't carry narrow in their version (rock & tone). PLEASE consider carrying those. I need them!!!

May 18th 2011 at 7:54 PM EST

I have walked in the NB rock & tones for a week now and have noticed the difference in the way I feel when walking. I am training for a Marathon (Walk) and wondered if anyone else has walked the distance in these shoes?
I feel like I'm wlaking faster as well.

May 24th 2011 at 12:07 PM EST

I am really comfortable wearing these shoes. I bought a second pair so I can wear them at home and at work. But can I wash them? I've washed lots of shoes on the gentle cycle/cold. Never killed a pair yet. But I'm a little nervous about these.
Any suggestions?

I have a pair of New Balance #1442 shoes. Do you still make them? If not, is there a new shoe that replaced them? I have problems with my feet and these seemed to help. Thank you! Ellen
