Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race Presented By New Balance To Be Held September 14th

September 2nd 2008

Event to Benefit Local Charities and Scholarships

Boston, MA -

Runners from around the Commonwealth will join family and friends of the late Boston City Councilor Brian Honan for the 5th Annual Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race presented by New Balance on Sunday, September 14th at 12 noon.

Brian J. Honan served the Allston-Brighton community for more than seven years as District City Councilor and for his whole life as an advocate for Allston-Brighton and the people of the City of Boston. He lived a life filled with purpose and spirit, which transformed ideas into action. Brian's vocation in serving the people of Boston – seniors, young people, community-based workers and educators – left an unparalleled legacy.

The Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund was established to carry on Brian's commitment to the causes that he championed throughout the course of his life. The charitable fund has been able to support and foster local and national programs that support education, recreation, housing and healthcare through funds raised through the Brian J. Honan 5K. The road race also benefits the scholarship funds of the Allston Board of Trade and the Brighton Board of Trade.

Covering just over 3 miles of Allston-Brighton, the family-friendly run/walk invites everyone from competitive runners to friends of the beloved councilor to celebrate his life and work, and to continue building his legacy. The race begins at The Kells at 161 Brighton Avenue (near the intersection of Harvard Avenue and Brighton Avenue) at 12 noon and participants and spectators are encouraged to return to The Kells just as the annual Allston-Brighton parade kicks-off from Packard's Corner in Allston.

Participants in the USA Track and Field sanctioned event will enjoy a host of world-class race amenities, including a pre-race stretching area, a pace car, post-race refreshments hosted by The Kells, and free long-sleeve race t-shirts for the first 1000 race entrants.

Those wishing to participate in the Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race may register at www.brianhonan.org, call Race Director Richard Grealish at 617-549-7503, or register on race day beginning at 9:30am at The Kells.
