First Annual New Balance Girls on the Run 5K to be Held in Boston on May 14, 2011

February 24th 2011

Boston, MA -

Runners and walkers from across the Commonwealth are invited to join family and friends for the first annual New Balance Girls on the Run® 5K on Saturday, May 14th at 1:00 p.m. in Boston. Funds raised from the event will benefit Girls on the Run of Suffolk County.

"As presenting sponsor, New Balance is proud to bring the Girls on the Run® 5K to our hometown and support the important values of healthy living and self-confidence that this program teaches young girls," says Catherine Marquette, cause marketing manager, New Balance.

Founded in 1996 in North Carolina by Molly Barker, a four-time Hawaii Ironman Triathlete, Girls on the Run® promotes healthy lifestyles and self respect for pre-teen girls through a global curriculum that combines a fitness training program with self-esteem enhancing workouts that encourage emotional, social and physical development. The program culminates in a 3.1 mile run/walk. Girls on the Run® of Suffolk County launched in 2010 through Hill House, a community organization in Beacon Hill that works to provide support and programming for city residents of all ages.

Covering 3.1 miles along the Charles River, the family-friendly run/walk welcomes all participants from competitive runners to families with strollers. The race begins at the DCR Hatch Shell and follows along the Esplanade, ending back at the Hatch Shell. Before the 5K, Hill House will sponsor the 5th Annual Backyard Dash, which includes a Diaper Dash and a 1K Family Fun Run & Walk, beginning at 12:30. After the races, a picnic will be offered for all attendees.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer Boston girls the opportunity to participate in the Girls on the Run® program," says Ian Moorhouse, executive director, Hill House. "The funds raised from this race will help us ensure a viable program and expansion to other city locations in the near future."

Interested participants can register at www.GOTRBoston.org or register on race day beginning at noon. Registration fees include t-shirts, bib numbers and entrance to the picnic.

New Balance has been a sponsor of Girls on the Run® for 12 years and is currently a national sponsor of Girls on the Run® and title sponsor of the Girls on the Run® 5K series.
