I wore this shoe's predecessor (790s) before I purchased these. The 790's were OK, I removed 3-4 mm of padding out of the shoe's heel to make them truly "flat" and they served me well. They were not "great" for "no socks" running but I got by. The sole on the bottom of the shoe was a bit "hard", and these tended to slip on hard surfaces. Another deficiency was that the "rockstop" only did a moderate job of stopping rocks and roots. Therefore, I had to tread lightly over that type of terrain. So, the NEW MT 100's are much better! The insole is glued in and is an excellent texture for "no socks" running, so far. The rockstop also includes a thin fiberglass plate which does STOP rock and roots in the fore/mid-foot part of the shoe. The back does not have this plate. The sole is also a more "sticky" rubber and does not slip on hard surfaces like the 790s. My one complaint is that the heel/forefoot sole thickness ratio is the same as the 790s. So to make them flat I had to remove 3-4 mm of padding from the heel. New Balance, you've come 95% of the way to the perfect shoe, make them flat and you'll get the extra 5%. Maybe next time?

I ran the Leadville Trail 100 last year in the NB790's which I like very well. I am a minimalist runner and the new MT100 looks like a winner to me. I just finished the RnR Arizona Marathon (all road) and have over 200 miles in the MT100. Shoe feels great and it is like running barefoot, but with a 10mm heel lift. Anton Krupicka and NB have designed another great shoe. Can't wait for the snow to melt to give them a good workout on the trails this spring. Will give another review once I can do some trail running. In the review NB ask "Re-Purchase Likelihood" liked the first pair so I purchased 3 more right away; just in case NB changes the design. As always colors are OK to change but not the shoe

New Balance didn't just hit a home run; they knocked this one out of the park! Out of the box first impressions were that these shoes were very light and simply designed, just what I was looking for. Upon trying them on, I would say they run small, but they were basically designed to be worn with no socks or perhaps a very thin sock. In fact, I called New Balance Direct and ordered the next half size up, but then decided to take a test run anyway. What the heck, they have a total satisfaction guarantee? I ran 12 hard, rocky, hilly miles in them straight out of the box, and I would say they are the best shoes I've ever had on my feet: nimble, fast, light, yet with just enough protection from rocks. I didn't tie the left shoe tight enough, so I ended up with a pretty bad blister on my heel, but I feel that is more my fault than the shoe's. I plan to try to run a 50 mile ultra in three weeks in these. Awesome job, New Balance!!!! If you plan on wearing anything but the thinnest of socks, go at least a half size up.

Great shoe! I love running barefoot in these. However, just like the first reviewer, I wish New Balance had made these completely flat. I don't know that I'd know how to remove midsole material like it seemed like the first reviewer was talking about, but I am considering shaving some off the heel lugs to make it flatter. OPTIMALLY, however, New Balance would just put less material in the heel's midsole, since it's good to have some traction in the heel if you're coming down a steep, slippery slope. All in all, I will be buying these again. If New Balance can make these shoes truly flat (zero heel to forefoot height differential), I'd say they'd be perfect!
