6 Tips for Night Runners

Runners are people too! They have their busy days, with phones ringing off the hook, children to care for, work emails piling up — you know how it goes. When this happens, what do you do? Put off your run until tomorrow? No way! You look forward to your run all day; it's how you unwind and decompress. If this sounds familiar, it probably means you end up running at night.

When hitting the pavement after dark, extra safety measures are necessary. Solo runners are vulnerable to all kinds of accidents and dangers, and taking precautions will help you stay safe while working up a nighttime sweat. Don't overlook these six tips:

  1. Wear colorful and reflective clothing. Who said neon wasn't back in style? Wear bright, reflective (and glow-in-the-dark!) fitness gear to increase your visibility to oncoming cars and people around you.
  2. Run against traffic. Even if you usually run with the flow of traffic, it's dangerous to do so at night. You have a much better chance at avoiding a car if you can see it coming. Keep your head up and remain on the lookout.
  3. Switch up your routes. Don't follow any patterns that may be easy to memorize. Try to mix it up, and always avoid dangerous areas or places with low lighting.
  4. Get a running partner. Running partners are good for more than just pacing. There's safety in numbers, and it's always best to have a friend who can call for help if one of you falls or is injured.
  5. Signal your movements. All those rules you follow during the day? They require even more diligence after dark. If you're going to cross a road, signal your intention to nearby cars, bikers and other runners.
  6. Keep an ear out. While running at night, you should be extra alert and always aware of your surroundings. Avoid headphones and headbands that cover your ears. With your vision compromised, you need to rely on your hearing to detect nearby vehicles and people. If you have to run with music, keep it at a reasonable volume.
