KARA'S STORY - My name is Kenneth Kirby Fones. I was born in Washington, D.C. I lived in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia for the first 13 years of my life. We then moved to Florida for my brother's asthma. He got worse in Florida and we moved to Tucson 3 years later.

I went to Catalina High School for 2 years and graduated in 1959. I went to the Army Reserve for 6 months and upon return, went to the University of Arizona. I graduated in 3 years and in 1963 when I graduated from the U of A, I went to Anaheim, California School District to teach History and coach football and baseball. While in Anaheim, I worked at Disneyland as a Supervisor for Main Street. In March, my dear wife, Genice and I were married. Mr. Gridley called me to come back to Tucson and teach at Catalina. I taught P.E., Government, Health and coached football and tennis. We have the state record of 99 wins and no defeats in 5 of 6 years. We won the State Championship 5 years in a row. I received my Masters in Counseling in 1967 and went to Tucson High in 1970 as a Counselor and Tennis Coach. In 1971, I moved to Santa Rita High School where I was a Counselor, Football Coach and Tennis Coach. While at Santa Rita High School 1971-1982, I worked on my PHD where I got 120 grad units. I worked under Dr. Oscar Christianson in Family Counseling.

In 1982 I took a sabbatical to go back East to visit 20 universities and academics. While at Santa Rita, I was named the Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer. I have helped many young men and women go to the Air Force, Naval, West Point, Coast Guard Academises and ROTC at 20 universities. I went to Saguaro High School in Fall of 1982 to be a Counselor and Assistant Softball Coach. While at Sahuaro, we won 4 State Championships in softball making a total of 10 State Championships in Tennis and Softball.

In 1967, my friend and I started Weed Trol of Tucson which has grown from 35 customers in 1967 and in 1993 I had 400 customers when I retired from TUSD after 30 years. I now have 1700 customers and 6 employees.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2004. Dr. McCabe and Dr. Manning treated me and after 35 treatments of radiation, I was good for 5 years. In March of 2009, I found a lump under my left arm. Dr. Manning sent me back to Dr. McCabe to have the lump removed. The results were that I had 18 lymph nodes all over my body with cancer that had returned. I have been in chemo treatment for the past 6 months with Dr. Robert Brooks. My counts have gone way down and as of 1/20/10, I have one more treatment.

The Lord and my Church and all the prayers from all over the nation have blessed me and I am going to Win this Race.
