Tony Krupicka and Chris Wawrousek talk about the evolution of NB Minimus

While much of the development of New Balance's forthcoming NB Minimus footwear line took place inside the Lawrence, Mass., labs, many of the insights that informed the design were gleaned some 1,800 miles to the west, in the hills outside of Boulder, Colo. NewBalance.com talked with Senior Designer Chris Wawrousek and Team New Balance ultramarathoner Anton Krupicka, who helped test and develop NB Minimus, about how the pursuit of the ideal minimalist shoe was driven by perpetual prototyping.

Anton Krupicka explains the philosophy behind the development of NB Minimus.

The NB Minimus Hack
790790
Tony made a number of "modifications" to his NB790s, starting with significant trimming of the midsole to deliver a near-minimal drop from heel to midfoot. He trimmed just over ½” off the tongue and cut a notch in the rear of the upper for his Achilles tendon "because sometimes it gets really dry and cracked, and the shoe can rub there."
100100
The MT100 incorporated much of Tony’s feedback, so his "customization" was limited to the trimming of the midsole – a modification informed by the neutral foot position at the heart of the inspiration for NB Minimus.

Chris Wawrousek: “Obviously, we're super excited about NB Minimus as a design group. [New Balance Product Manager] Bryan Gothie had this funny story about how he met Tony [Anton] and Kyle [Skaggs, also of Team New Balance] at a running shop. When Bryan came back, he started talking about these guys and the great things that they were doing. We all got super excited to have the opportunity to create product for such elite caliber athletes with direct input from them.

This is sort of a great inspiration point for us to jump off and really try to address some of the things that we were doing in trail running. Tony and Kyle represented a different breed of ultrarunning. We had done some ultramarathon research three or four years prior to working with these guys, and the shoes that they were driving towards were these really heavy, big shoes, and the guys that were doing it were grueling along – not at all what you think of when you think about the typical marathon runner. Then guys like Tony and Kyle came to the sport and brought this actual racing mentality with them, so to get to work with them was really pretty exciting.”

Tony Krupicka: “For me, I was with a different shoe company before New Balance, and I've always been a huge shoe dork, really into the design. As a runner, it's the one piece of gear that really matters the most. So when I met Bryan in Colorado Springs, he was genuinely interested in what Kyle and I had to say about the shoes that he had with him.

Once I signed a contract, he started sending boxes, and Kyle and I were just beating up these shoes. Bryan would ask us “What do you guys think?”, and we told him what we thought and, for the first time for me, these guys were actually listening to us and cared about what we thought. So right from the beginning, I had this sense that if I told them something, they would genuinely consider it, rather than just saying “OK” and doing whatever they wanted. So it's been great, and I've really enjoyed working with them.”

NB.com: So, what was the point at which Tony's input began to shape the product development of the MT100 and later NB Minimus?

CW: “Well, the 100 started out as this shoe that we wanted to make specifically for Tony and Kyle and really aim it at racing. As so often happens, in the broader market it was almost too early for us to come out with something quite so extreme. As a designer, it was disappointing, because the feedback we were getting from Tony and Kyle was very specific – things like the drop in the last. But these were things that the broader consumer base wasn't really ready for.

Then all of a sudden, you had Born to Run [Christopher McDougall's best-selling book about long-distance running], which created this whole new energy around this idea that we weren't really meant to run on wedges. Which is what we had heard from Tony and Kyle before but weren't ready to leverage yet. So, a lot of what we had talked about with Tony and Kyle and the origins of the 100 – the 100 itself didn't really live up to all of those ideas, but when we were able to free ourselves up and do NB Minimus, a lot of the seeds had been planted with the 100.”

NB.com: Tony, we've talked before about some of the “customization” you did to the 100s you were running in. How much did that influence the development of NB Minimus?

TK: “Well, the 100 was the first shoe that I had a lot of input on, and I had been learning a lot about shoe design and construction along the way. There were things I wasn't happy with, like the way that the upper integrated with the platform on the 100, so I ended up trying to fix that by, basically, trimming down the platform. That was really my motivation for the carving I was doing on the 100s, and even the 790s. Basically just going for that flatter drop between the heel and the forefoot. Like Chris said, we were really just a year or two early with the 100 in terms of being able to reach the consumer – not everyone was excited yet about having a really flat, flexible shoe.

NB Minimus, though, is really a whole different shoe line than the 100 series, which is nice because it really allows you to get kind of radical, as opposed to sticking with conventional shoe designs. ”

CW: “Certainly the conversation – from where we were with the 100 to when we started the NB Minimus – the range of what was acceptable footwear just became so much broader. Years ago, we would talk about things like “Can we move that heel crashpad 2mm forward, or is that going to impact the medial rollover too much?” Now, the scope of the conversations you can have about shoes has totally changed to this really open, really fun area to work in.”

NB.com: So, is this an iterative process in which Tony gets a new pair of shoes and gives feedback, and Chris' team takes that feedback and makes adjustments? How does the actual collaborative process work?

TK: “I got some pretty early prototypes of the NB Minimus, and all they were was this rudimentary sole with the upper from the 100 so that I could run in them. Actually, even before that I got what was really just the last. Really, it was more like a slipper. That was super early in the process. We hadn't even really been thinking about the shoe yet, we just had a last. From there, they sent me some CAD drawings, and I would comment on them and send them back. So from my end, it's been pretty integrated between us from the start.”

CW: “Sometimes in my mind, it’s hard to separate out what NB Minimus is today from this whole field of research that we’ve been doing for a number of years, since our Advanced Concepts team identified natural running as a focal point. Those early prototypes were really a test bed for understanding What does it mean if you change the heel to toe drop from 6mm to 3mm to 0mm, and how does that change people's running?

The Evolution of NB Minimus

NB.com: To what extent, Tony, did you have to learn to speak a designer's language to play a more substantial role in the product development process?

TK: “Well, I've learned about durometers and upper materials and that sort of thing, but I really just tell the designers what I'd like to see and how I would like it to feel on my foot and perform. Through osmosis you end up learning what these terms are. ”

CW: “Tony talks really well about shoes. It’s pretty clear what he’s after.”

NB.com: Is the feedback you're giving, Tony, geared toward making a better shoe for racing, for training or just for running?

TK: “For me, it's typically a racing shoe. I end up, for the most part, training and racing in the same shoe. That's changed somewhat with NB Minimus – and this is really tied to my philosophy on the barefoot running movement – because for me it's not so much about an all-or-nothing approach. If I train on a daily basis in a shoe like NB Minimus, which is super-flexible and really low to the ground, then that allows me to race in a shoe that's really light as well. For my purposes, on the terrain I cover, NB Minimus might not be quite protective enough. Training in them on a daily basis allows me to race in a shoe that's much lighter than I might otherwise.

The line itself is sort of split: The 100 is kind of a racing shoe that I'll use for long runs, and the NB Minimus is something I'll use more as a training tool. Over the last few months, I've begun to gear my feedback to the two shoes with that in mind. ”

Glossary
After our conversation, we asked Chris about a few of the terms that were tossed around. Here's what he came back with.
Last
"The foundation. It influences everything on a final shoe, yet can be hard to understand, even to a veteran of the footwear industry. Last work is a strange blend of art and science, like alchemy or something."
Heel crashpad
"Engineered area to coincide with a user's first point of contact between the shoe and the ground. Usually on the heel, but in the case of NB Minimus we are hoping to move that point of contact farther forward. It’s most obvious on the MR10. The slightly radiused area of rubber towards the forefoot of the outside of the shoe is kind of a 'crash pad.' Tony’s old shoes greatly influenced this decision, though he and our team still debate whether it’s better for him or not."
Durometer
"Often used broadly to describe various properties about the midsole and outsole. Generally speaking, it’s what people are referring to when they say a shoe is 'hard' or 'soft,' and technically they are correct -- durometer is a measure of hardness. In reality though, 'hard' or 'soft' comes from combination of factors that also includes compound (the chemical makeup of the components), specific gravity of the material, geometry, upper construction and assembly method."

March 2011 cannot come soon enough. These are going to be a day one purchase.

Looks amazing! Cannot wait.... Thanks for making (what looks to be) such a perfect shoe.

In the interim, is there a firm release date for the MT101 - e.g. what date will they be available for purchase on shopnewbalance.com?

Thank you!

September 22nd 2010 at 4:51 PM EST

I got my MT101s from my local new balance store last week.

September 22nd 2010 at 9:38 PM EST

I can't wait either! I might even do more trail runs instead just training on road/track...

September 23rd 2010 at 2:09 PM EST

I'm a little confused. If I understand correctly, the minimus line of shoes are all going to have a 4mm heel elevation? Why?
If this is true, it is very disappointing! Why can't they have a true zero heel elevation. Isn't the whole point to be minimal and allow the barefoot to function as it is naturally intended? !!

September 26th 2010 at 2:04 AM EST

I hope these come in bigger sizes! Great job New Balance!!!

September 26th 2010 at 4:44 AM EST

Excellent video! Tony's love of running really comes across and the new shoe really makes me see New Balance as a design titan and forward thinking company. As much as I love New Balance shoes, I haven't always seen New Balance as the Apple of running shoes... until I saw the NB Minimus. I cant wait to run in this shoe.

I love New Balance for its commitment to the American worker. Will the NB Minimus be made in America? It would be a shame if it isn't.

Would it kill you to make an all black shoe? ;) I really want the NB comfort of the MT101 that I can wear at work with jeans, without a blindingly bright N. Many of your shoes would be perfect for business casual comfort, if only they were all black!

I love the fit of NB shoes, but need something in black.

Thanks!

October 22nd 2010 at 7:34 PM EST

Is the toebox ample enough to accommodate Toe Socks...? NB, you guys have reduced the size of the toe box in your newer models, yes...?

October 27th 2010 at 2:55 AM EST

I have been a fan of the 790s and I just ran in my new 101s and they are pretty bomb. I would love to see them a little wider in the forefoot (i.e. EE, EEE), and with less of a tongue, but NB is totally on track with 790s, 101s, and the whole minimalist approach.

November 9th 2010 at 9:52 PM EST

What will be the weight of the Minimus Trail version?

RunKellyRun   NewBalance.com Staff
November 10th 2010 at 4:57 PM EST

@hexclimber For NB Minimus, we widened the toebox on the new NB Minimus last to allow for toe splay, so they will feel wider than our traditional performance last (PL-1). However, the uppers were constructed so that you can wear them without socks (they have seamless sock liners to minimize chafing and a contoured shape to fit the foot). Hope this helps!

@JBR The Minimus Trail version weighs 7.4 oz in a men's size 9.5D.

@Eman - Totally agree on the widths. We're getting that feedback a lot and I'm happy to confirm the product teams are working on widths for the next round of updates.

@jamesgrote - if you check out the new NB Minimus page (here: www.newbalance.com/nb-minimus) you can get a sneak peek at the 'Life' version of the shoe which will be for everyday/walking use. It will come in the all-black you see there, as well as a black and grey version. And it didn't even kill us! ;)

November 10th 2010 at 5:53 PM EST

Thanks RKR. So will Minimus replace the NB MT100/101 (which I love and which is approx. the same weight)?
And what are the main differences between the two?

November 10th 2010 at 9:40 PM EST

@RunKellyRun Thanks for the response! I can't wait to see the Minimus when it launches. I assume the all black version will actually be all black without a giant white letter "N".

RunKellyRun   NewBalance.com Staff
November 11th 2010 at 11:26 AM EST

@JBR - I checked with our product manager on the MT101 and he said it'll definitely be sticking around. He said they're testing out the first prototypes of the next round (the MT110) and Anton loves them so far.

@jamesgrote - agh! You're right, they do have some white on them. The ones you see on the NB Minimus page are the final version so they will still have the white outline of the "N" (but only the outline, not the full N).

November 11th 2010 at 11:35 AM EST

@jamesgrote - That's what permanent black magic markers are for! Stroke, stroke, stroke. Like magic. All black!

November 11th 2010 at 4:26 PM EST

@RKR. So what's the "philosophical" difference between the MT100/101/110 and the Minimus.

November 18th 2010 at 5:00 PM EST

@JBR-Minimus is more of a training tool and the 100 series is meant for race distances/conditions (i.e. bombing down the trail setting a pr). The ****** to the 101 is gonna turn heads. 2 of our runners (tony and eric) have been running in some protos and love it. Stay tuned.

December 2nd 2010 at 4:18 PM EST

NB very nice

December 8th 2010 at 6:21 PM EST

I just bought a pair of mt101gh they are too short and NB seems ,like most manufacturers, to want to make up for that by making the shoe wider. That leaves it with a bubble toe andf a sloppy fit. Very unsupportve. I'm a little worried about trying a narrower size as that doesn't solve the problem with length.

December 24th 2010 at 12:59 PM EST

i think going to a longer length will solve your problem with the length jms, no??

January 7th 2011 at 4:10 PM EST

If these are supposed to be natural posture running shoes, why is the toe off the ground? I'm pretty sure when everyone stands up barefoot, their toes touch the ground, shouldn't the shoes do the same thing? Seems like an obvious design feature to me.

Yet another minimalist shoe maxing out at size 14...us clown-feet runners need shoes like these too!

January 30th 2011 at 8:32 PM EST

I'd also love to hear some feedback as to the reason for the 4mm heel lift.

Thanks!

January 31st 2011 at 8:33 PM EST

Any word on 110's when they are coming out? And is the 110 an improved 101? What are the differences?

February 2nd 2011 at 3:00 AM EST

@otmfit - From what NewBalance has said, apparently they felt that people weren't ready to go all the way to zero drop. Personally I think that's an insult. People have proven they are fine with it and want it with how well the VFFs have done (and how well the Merrell's will do).

If they think people aren't ready, then put a little more cushion. But more cushion doesn't have to mean heel drop. I just hope the next version will include some cushion (just a little more than other minimalist shoes), but with no toe drop.

You listening NewBalance? People are ready for 0 toe drop.

RunKellyRun   NewBalance.com Staff
February 2nd 2011 at 5:25 PM EST

otmfit @philip - Hi there, and thanks for everyone's input! We agree, there's a need in the market for a 0mm drop shoe. We intended for this first round of NB Minimus to be a great transition shoe for those who are looking to get into the minimalist running segment, as well as those who have gone to 0mm, and felt like they needed a bit more support, protection, or extremely minimal cushioning. That said, a 0mm drop shoe is definitely on our radar. We appreciate hearing the passion for one!

February 2nd 2011 at 7:33 PM EST

@RunKellyRun - I'm glad to hear you guys are considering a full zero drop. There's definitely a need for a shoe with a little more cushion than the 3-5mm other minimal shoes offer, but while maintaining zero drop and no arch support. Do you have the specs for thickness under the heel for trail/road/life?

Also, if you really want to call this shoe "the right approach to the minimalist running experience," you gotta get rid of that "toe spring." There's no reason to elevate the toes that much, especially in a supposedly "minimal" minded shoe. In a previous prototype video, the Road looked pretty flat, but the latest videos and pictures have all with massive toe spring (pause these videos right when they start to see no toe spring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxIzuejCXbU&feature=player_embedded#t=0m45s and toe spring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM09-EfC218&feature=related#t=3m19s). I know every other NB shoe has that design, but I'm really surprised your designers would keep such a massive spring in your flagship "minimal" shoe.

ps - I love that the only comment on the first video is a concern for zero toe drop... a zero drop shouldn't just be on your radar, it should already be in line for a fall 11 or spring 12 release (which is too late to the game if you ask me). I might have to hold out for the "real" minimus with no toe spring and no heel drop. Don't let me down!

February 3rd 2011 at 2:15 AM EST

Well, I read most of the New Balance Minimus reviews over the internet and I will buy the shoes without ever seeing them (road, life and especially trail). I already tried 4mm heel-to-toe drop shoes and I just don't care because it's WAY better than 18mm !!?? I will wait to put them on before saying there's any mistake with that... I guess all the engineers and Tony Krupicka knew what they did when they decided it would be better to have a 4mm than a 0mm and I fully trust them. Actually I run in Saucony Kinvara and I really enjoy them even if they have a 4mm drop. They're not full minimalist some say? Who care if they're fast and they feel good? The specs are one thing, how they feel in the field is another and I trust only the second (wich reviews are extremely good on these shoes already: http://www.runblogger.com/2010/08/new-balance-minimus-new-information.html).
@RunKellyRun: I am actually on a road trip in Europe (France until mid-march and then heading to Italy), do you know if the release date is also mid-march here? Any idea if the shop in Annecy "42,195km" will have them mid-march?
Thanks and congratulations for your product (according to the review at least)!!! You have a new New Balance owner in me :)

PS. Absolutely no offense to those who asked for a 0mm heel-to-toe drop!

Shoes so great they got Jesus as a spokesperson for their video!

February 3rd 2011 at 10:11 PM EST

I received great advice from an expert on running shoes. They said that a lot of people want to be fanatical about barefoot/minimalist running shoes, and make the transition overnight. Might be fun or trendy, but not a healthy idea. They were seeing a lot of frustrated runners who were getting injured because they couldn't change years of "programming," so quickly. For the runner who wants to make a switch to a minimalist shoe, I think the 4mm is a great idea, and actually responsible on NB's part.
@PLcan Great points. I have the Kinvara too. Perfect shoe for someone making the change from the old high heels. Maybe someday I'll be ready for 0mm.

February 4th 2011 at 3:21 AM EST

@MnAce: LOLLLLLLLLLL !!!!!!!!!! :D

I would add that I come from Quebec and am actually in France. There are millions of runners here in France and tons of running shops but I had to order my Kinvara from the UK. There's no such thing as minimalist shoes or barefooting here. I asked a shop rep in Geneva about five fingers and he looked at me as I was totally crazy to try to run in them. The only shoe I found that might looked like a minimalist shoe here was a Nike Free run+.
The point is, I think in USA minimalist shoes are a real trend, but it's not in a lot of places in the world (like France and Switzerland). It might be a shoe to convert as many people as possible cause New Balance is actually doing an amazing marketing blast on the Minimus and I think the shoe will attract a lot of new people to minimalist shoes running all over the world!
I don't even consider myself a barefoot runner cause I don't want to always run barefoot (do some drills barefoot on the grass, few times a week, but I don't do it right now because there's too much snow outside). But after owning my first 4mm heel-to-toe drop, I can say that I benefit a lot from being a minimalist shoes runner: I didn't get injured since I transited from my XT Wings 2 and my gait and running economy improved a lot. To be honest, I don't feel comfortable running in totally barefoot; I just to it for my gait and I actually prefer to run in a minimalist shoe that is not as drastic as the FiveFingers. I feel safer in a shoe and the Minimus is for people like me !!! I really look forward to their release so I can order my pairs!

@caseyfive: I totally agree with you, thanks :)
@RunKellyRun: you should suggest your marketing guys to do some advertising about the Minimus (and the benefits of running barefoot) in the mags in France (Running Attitude or Jogging international). Runners think it's crazy not to have high elevated heels here... maybe they would need some "education"; and there's none avalaible. I read all my books about running in english (ChiRunning, RUN: the mind-body method of running by feel, natural running, barefoot running, born to run, etc) and the french don't speak english at all.

Regards,
PLcan

Can anyone explain why my uppers are already tearing away from the sole on my MT101's? I dont want to bad talk New Balance or the shoe, cause don't get me wrong, I love these shoes. These shoes are amazing, almost perfect. But, I bought them at the beginning of January and now, a month later, the shoes are already tearing. They will probably be unusable in a week or two. Right at the ball of my foot on the left shoe, behind the plastic strip over the toe area, the first area of mesh, is completely tearing away from the sole. Its happening to the right shoe as well, not as bad as the left, but still happening. The only concern I had with the shoes is durability, I wasn't sure if they would last, and now I think I might know. Does Tony K. go through a pair every week? How is somebody that's not sponsored supposed to afford running in the 101's? Please look into this issue New Balance, see if anyone else is having similar problems, and fix it. I seriously want these to be the shoes I run in forever, (not this one pair, but the 101's in general), but if they they do not last, then I can't afford to replace them every month. Please help NB. I do truly love these shoes other than the durability issue. Thanks NB.

Why is it that the new balance production model is black and yellow, rather than orange and black? I thought the orange ones looked way cooler than the black and yellow, which honestly look lame to me.

Just wanted to join the conversation and say I'm looking forward to the Minimus trail version. Would love to use them for backpacking, and for winter running in Wisco when you need to wear socks for warmth.

I would also like to see a 0 DROP shoe!!

I second spencerv1951's question; is the orange model going to be available? Much sharper than the black, imo,

Although I did buy a black pair today! Would like both, though.

February 13th 2011 at 4:01 PM EST

I hope these shoes come in large sizes! I wear size 15 and am having trouble finding a company that offers minimalist shoes in my size. I have VFFs but I need a normal looking shoe also.

February 19th 2011 at 11:08 PM EST

@RunKellyRun... So I got an e-mail from customer support, I e-mailed them back and have gotten no response at all. Meanwhile my MT101's have continued to fall apart, the uppers are continuing to tear away from the sole all along the inside of the shoe. I am extremely disappointed in this shoe (quality). I am out $75 and now I pretty much have no shoes to run in. I ran in a pair or cascadia's for two years, the shoes are thrashed, but not completely coming apart. I dont expect shoes to last 2 years, but 2 months? Come on. Are you guys going to do anything about this, or just make it look like you are doing something on this post?

@nmrajotte - We apologize for the delayed response; I have sent you an email to follow up on your situation. Thank you for your patience and continued support of NB!

February 25th 2011 at 11:25 AM EST

@nmrajotte I purchased my MT101's Oct 25,2010. Due to weather I've only been able to put around 100 miles on them and just ran my first race in them (a 50K).

After the race I noticed the same failure! The inside heel area where the upper meets the sole, it was tearing apart.

They are still usable but not for long!

I'm really excited about the Minimus product line but this has put a serious damper on it

February 26th 2011 at 10:25 PM EST

Picked these up yesterday, ran 20k in them today..

...unreal...

February 28th 2011 at 1:24 AM EST

Uppers were tearing on my 101s at the first metatarsal head....but some freesole seemed to "knit them back together" Pre applied for my two new pairs. Also love the 507s in the mud....what a shoe!

February 28th 2011 at 9:45 PM EST

I use a few different types of NB shoes.
For Road 8.5 USA NB758 2EE
For Trail 8.5 USA MT101's D
And love them both, however the MT101's being D fitting only just fit width wise.
So comparing the 758 2EE and the MT101's D to the Minimus Trail do you think the Minimus Trail 8.5 is as wide as the 758 2EE or at least as wide as the MT101's?

I am In Australia so will not be bale to try before I buy.
I tried on some Merrell Trail Gloves and the 8.5 USA is to long and the 8.0 USA is to narrow.

March 3rd 2011 at 9:56 AM EST

I'm 11.5 EE in a lot of shoes. the 101 are snug but doable for me. the minimus was too narrow for me. bummer about the trail glove I was hoping that would work. I may be stuck in VFF for awhile longer.

March 5th 2011 at 11:43 PM EST

I'd been looking forward to trying the MT 101s and bought a pair today and took them on their first run.

I like 'em. They are definitely different than the trail shoes I've been wearing, and I have to watch my form carefully (light, midfoot landing), but I like that; I want to run as efficiently as possible. And they may not be as minimal as the Minimus, or VFF, but they're extremely low-bulk and have a good contact feel on-trail. I also ran on some pretty nasty rocks and felt nothing through the sole. I really like what Tony, Chris and others have come up with.

Great video, too. I recognize some of those trails, and they are fun ones :)

March 15th 2011 at 2:11 AM EST

I just got a pair of Minimus WT10. They are a absolutely gorgeous shoe. I ran 4 miles the first day I got them and they feel super light. Normally I buy the guy’s version of running shoe because the only ones available in for women are usually purple or pink. I love that they made the women’s in grey but I kind of like the men’s orange ones also. One thing that I did notice on my run was that although the shoes are made out of a very stretchy fabric the band that crosses over the toes at the base of the laces have very little give. Half way through my run my left foot was feeling a bit of discomfort. I love everything else about them. I have always worn New Balance because they make the best running shoes and they are the shoes that my dad always wears so they remind me of my happy childhood.

March 18th 2011 at 2:13 AM EST

I wish they would make these, and more lightweight shoes in 2E. Please NB, start doing so!

March 22nd 2011 at 12:56 AM EST

A near perfect shoe?? I've had MT10 for a few weeks now..It needs 0 drop; a deeper toe box; and a kevlar layer in the fore foot for sharp gravel....!! I love the direction NB is going . I've been a minimalist for more than 30 yr.
Thanks NB for working with Anton; someone who understands Running TECHNIQUE.....!

Can you use the NB Minimus for high school track? For which events is it suitable or not?

March 26th 2011 at 4:54 PM EST

I just purchased the NB Minimus Trail and love them. My one concern is that I run barefoot in them and am concerned about oder buildup. Can these shoes be machine washed on gentle cycle, or do you have any suggestions to keep them clean. Also is it ok to get them wet in streams while out running.

March 28th 2011 at 7:11 PM EST

I love the Minimus. I used to just buy the Asics Speedstar. The last two versions lost the ability to toe off with a much stiffer toe box. This shoe is more like a swiss army knife. Besides being a runner I also teach tennis. I was eyeing this shoe especially since it has a wide lateral low base. It was awesome.

I am an inventor and a gadget geek so any time something new comes out I have to be one of those early adapters.

Sizing- I had to go a size bigger. It seems there is too much pressure on the inside of my instep in the smaller sizes. It sees other people at the store had the same experience.

Good Luck and Good Work don't get rid of the wide base.

In reply to[ xischn]'
You ask if the Minimus was good for track; YES!!! This is one of the best all around shoes, at this point....." with the few changes I mentioned", all the other shoe manufactures are playing catch up..
Most shoe changes are done by the trend, and not from research...

Just finished a 4hr adventure race in the marsh and woods of Williamsburg, Virginia and while many of the racers were losing their shoes to mud or sloshing around in wet shoes these shoes held up to all the abuse. My team mate and I finished first overall. Our first time putting these to the test and they passed with flying colors. Thank you New Balance I have and will be recommending to all my friends.

Two weeks ago I purchased my new silver minimus and I love them. I have a fracture toe and foot neuroma and these shows have saved me; Now I can start to walk and slowly pick up my pace towards recovery. There extremely light and super comfortable. I purchased a half bigger size for extra comfort. I can’t wait to get another pair in a different color. :)

WHERE CAN I BUY THESE SHOES?
I've been sweeping the net for a retailer that will sell me a pair but without luck so far. I live in Denmark and they won't arrive here until mid-summer earliest. Why is it made so hard to find?

April 28th 2011 at 12:10 AM EST

I just bought the NB Minimus yesterday. I was at the shoe store with intentions to buy the merrell barefoot but when I tried the NB Minumus on they felt so good that I purchased them instead. The price was the same.
Well today I woke up to do my workout and was excited to try the new running shoes. I ran/walked on the treadmill for 45 minutes. After about 20 minutes I could feel as if a blister were forming on my toe.
Sure enough when I took them off (I wore them w/o socks as suggested), I had 3 blisters. Even one on the side of my foot, which never happened before. Needless to say I have mixed feelings now about the NB Minimus. I thought of taking them back or maybe trying them again in a couple of weeks when my blisters heal. I was hoping to wear them for a race this coming weekend, but I don't want to chance it.
Well thats all I have. A bit disappointed because of the blisters. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. Did I wear them too long for the first time? Not sure.

Hi, New Balance and company,

Good effort with the Minimus. Seriously. Alas, I feel like there is a good deal of improvement needed. Specifically, the overall width of the shoe. Especially, the toe box. I am a huge fan of Vibram Five Fingers and Terra Plana, but loved the sleeker look of the Minimus.

However, when I tried a pair on last night at City Sports here in NYC, I was extremely disappointed with the toe crowding in the shoe. That specifically is one of the attributes I hate most about traditional shoes. It's uncomfortable and anatomically erroneous to not have our toes splay out and be functional whilst walking.

Like I said, I love the way the Miniums looks (so stylish and sleek) and I even loved how light it felt on my feet. However, until the aforementioned improvements in foot and toe width are made, I'll have to stick solely with all the minimal shoe options.

serioiusly, whats the deal with the mt20's? im salivating over them, but only see them offered by one site, which is kinda shady. i want the 0 drop!

Well... it's been a transition. Not an easy one! However, I can say it has been successful and I am fully in love with trail running and injury free. I can honestly say that I did not take heed to the advice of all the barefoot/minimalist runner and overdid it, I paid the price. However, after much pain, humility and learning to listen to my body, I am proud to say that I can regularly pound out the mileage on technical trails and feel great afterward. I stumbled on the barefoot style running through researching proper technique after having issues with my knees and back. I switched to the minimalist trail shoe and now I preach the Good News! In the last two months I have logged over 200 K. For me it's insane! I run 7 or 12 K daily and take breaks not because I'm sore but because life gets busy. If you are thinking about making the transition, just do it and don't look back. Take it easy though and when you overdo it try protein shakes and compression socks, this helped me out greatly. I used to love running, then for years hated it because of the pain, now I'm in love and it's part of my life again, this time for GOOD! It also helps having blissful trails close by :) Thanks NB for the killer kicks and for providing such a valuable resource.

June 27th 2011 at 4:52 PM EST

Just wanted to give some feedback on my Minimus trail shoes purchased in March – my reason for going the minimalist route was aimed at the Warrior Dash event held in PA in mid June. It’s about a 3.2 mile cross country run, with things like mud, tunnels, mud, cargo nets, mud, tires, walls, barbed wire (and more mud)… etc along the route just to make it more fun.

Given the change of stride required for the “barefoot” style, I eased into the shoes with a few weeks of short (1 mile) treadmill runs, allowing my legs to recover in between – the mid/front foot-strike style definitely loads your calves and Achilles more than typical shoes. By race time I was happily doing 3 – 4 miles on the road, no complaints about the shoes but rather about the +90F August heat we were going through in early June ! Well, the heat went away and the rain came, and we had 4 days of solid rain leading up to the event – PA is clay, and the “dry” parts of the course turned to mud, and the muddy parts just got plain nasty.

Well I have to say the Minimus shoes were fantastic ! Running through the rain-soaked woods with slick rocks and roots and puddles and mud bogs presented no problems, and even the non-running parts like crossing balance beams or scaling walls were no challenge to the shoes or my feet. I think they even gave me an advantage through the river sections (wading waist deep), and especially in the sections of ankle/knee deep mud. Other runners were having their heavy running shoes pulled off by the ooze, but the Minimus shoes stuck to my feet instead and I was able to make up plenty of ground on the other runners.

A great shoe !

Congrats to everyone who has successfully made the transition! We love hearing your stories. You continue to inspire us.

For those with questions:

@travisty, @PUEYSON - I will look into where these can be found in S. Korea and Denmark and get back to you both.

@Rashaan - these shoes will be available in wide widths as of Friday! If you try them out, we'd love to know what you think of the wider toe box.

@Roberto @gettinguponthe1 - The MT20 is a new offering in the NB Minimus collection and will be at select retailers starting Friday. It is built on the same sole unit as the MT10 but features a different upper design.

@gettinuponthe1 - the zero drop is coming. :) more details soon!

@Sammy - thank you for sharing your story! We're so happy you've had success, and thank you for the advice to runners about your transition.

What is the best way to wash them. I wear mine for crossfit without socks and they are starting to stink.

July 6th 2011 at 2:15 PM EST

I have ultra-narrow feet and it looks like you aren't making any of the minimalist shoes in narrow (like your other offerings)? All of the other minimalist brands do not work so #1) will you be making them in a narrow size and when? and #2) which of the shoes that are currently available has the narrowest last? Thanks!

July 12th 2011 at 6:51 PM EST

I am really interested in the NB minimus trail. Will they be launched on the norwegian market? Or do I have to go online? I would really like to try 'em out in a shop because my foot has a weird shape =)

cheers

I have a gripe about grip:

In my opinion, the current shoe is fine for dry trails or 8+ minute mile pace on wet trails. But please make a shoe for those of us that run 7 minute pace or better on wet trails. The grip on the current Minimus line is a joke in the mud when trying to run fast. I had to switch to a certain brand with an 8 in the name because I injured myself too many times trying to run muddy trails in the Minimus.

Ideally, I'd like to see a separate line for extra grip. I'd still wear the original line for dry trails since big lugs can be uncomfortable to run in on dry dirt.

And if I could add one more suggestion, a snug neoprene collar on the shoes or some way to attach gators would be nice. Running barefoot on muddy trails without gators just results in my shoes getting filled with chunks of mud and pebbles.

July 18th 2011 at 2:49 PM EST

I should be the poster child for the Minimus Life shoe. A few years ago, I had some back injuries which would result in back spasms, pain, numbness in my limbs every time I ran. The doctor told me to forget running, and I did for the most part for 7 years. I would do a LOTof walking with some very short jogging, but that was about it. Jogging resulted in pain and numbness.

That was until a month ago. As a fitness professional, I have done a lot of reading on the barefoot running, but could not imagine that someone who could not even walk barefoot in her house could ever do it on the road. I got some of the minimus life shoes, honestly for the looks and to wear for comfort shoes--not to exercise in.

One night, however I decided to just see what all the fuss with the minimal running was about. I planned on running up the block and back. I ended up going over two miles with no stopping AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NO PAIN OR DISCOMFORT. I have been running every since-- careful to only add a little more distance each day and then walking after to keep my distance milage up as I am training for both a half and full marathon.

Thanks new balance for getting me running again. None of the other brands fit me like yours. My wide foot just does not work with the others.

There was no response to RunTex's Set 26th, 2010 question of "Will the NB Minimus be made in America". Can we assume they are not made in the USA?

RunKellyRun   NewBalance.com Staff
August 16th 2011 at 5:28 PM EST

@robtracey, @RunTex - Sorry about that. Due to manufacturing limitations, these shoes will not be made in the USA.

August 23rd 2011 at 12:57 PM EST

@RunKellyRun - If the minimus is not made in the united states, then where are they manufactured. I don't understand your "Manufacturing Limitations". I would like to know what we can do to convince you to manufacture in the United States. I know you have several products made in USA and I would like to see all of your products made in USA. Thanks.

Any chance of the MT10's making it to the UK in the wide sizes?

October 11th 2011 at 8:01 AM EST

RunKelleyRun-
I checked out the newbalance.co.uk website for the mt101s but the 101s in the uk are different than the 101s in the us. The sole is different and appears to have arch support?!?!
will the us version be sold in the uk?

thanks
